The Urbandale Optimist Club is comprised of a group of people who not only want to give back to the community but want to improve themselves on a personal level. ranging in age from 20 to retirement, the group conducts about a project a month in Urbandale and the surrounding area focusing primarily on youth as we strive to Bring Out the Best in Youth, Our Communities and Ourselves. The Optimists work hand in hand with the local school system conducting projects involving English language learning students, conducting essay and public speaking contests that carry scholarship awards and a writing project dubbed Truly U to illustrate the literary talents of middle school students. The club has had a long standing partnership with the Children's Cancer Connection of Des Moines doing projects to positively impact he lives of children affected by the disease as well as their families. There is also the annual spring egg coloring and hunt for pre school aged children and the Avenue of the Flags project/fundraiser which involves homeowners signing up for a service to have a 3x5 flag placed in their front yard on the patriotic holidays of the year and Labor Day.
Personal and leadership development opportunities are aplenty through quarterly conferences held by the Iowa District of Optimist International as well as the annual international convention. The Urbandale Optimist Club is an autonomous organization with a president and board of directors to make policy decisions governing the directions of the club. The club meets on the second Tuesday of the month with committee work in between meeting to work on projects and other programming.
We hope you will consider becoming part of the club to both give back to the community and give back to yourself.
