Our Community Projects
The Urbandale Optimist Club works with community organizations and schools to develop projects and programming to support the needs of the Urbandale community and the surrounding Des Moines Areas. We have a few flagship programs which we host each year, but we are always expanding our projects to support the community and serve unmet needs.
EAster Egg HunT
Every year the members of the Urbandale Optimist Club host an Easter egg hunt for kids in first grade and below. Kids are broken up according to age, and led outside by the Easter bunny to begin the hunt. Prizes are plentiful, so all kid will come home with some delicious candy. A few special kids will even find a golden ticket which wins them a special prize. Before kicking off the hunt, we offer egg dying, crafts and Easter bunny photo ops. the Children's Cancer ConnectioN
One of Optimist International's main initiatives is the Childhood Cancer Campaign. Clubs across the country and world support organizations and causes aimed at ending childhood cancer. In addition, clubs partner with organizations that focus on improving the happiness and opportunities available to kids with cancer and their families. Our club partners with the Children's Cancer Connection for a special group event each year. We invite families involved with the organization to enjoy a day out with the kids for bowling, putt putt golf, or hayrack rides, snacks and fun. We love the smiling faces we see at the end of the event!
Avenue of Flags
We help homeowners in Urbandale, Iowa celebrate the patriotic holidays of the year, by offering American flag drop-off and pick-up on five holidays. When you sign up to join our Avenue of Flags, a flagpole receptacle is installed in your front lawn so you can proudly display your flag, showing support for all those who serve and protect our country. Leading up to the holiday, our club members head out to each home to put out the flag. At the conclusion of the holiday weekend, we pick up the flag. It's the easiest way for homeowners to show off their patriotism, and we love getting out to spread patriotism in the community. Learn more about adding your home to the Avenue of Flags.
